At the age of six, Andrea Freccero “drew” his first Disney cover on the beach of Bonassola (Liguria), copying a Robin Hood illustration by one of his all-time favorite artists, Don Bluth. It was just a game – he couldn’t have imagined that many years later his covers would be seen around the world.
After finishing art school, at 19 years old he came into contact with one of the greatsest italian Disney comics’ artists, G.B. Carpi. Following a long learning journey, he began collaborating with him. It was the late 1980s when Andrea embarked on his long Disney career, working on comics, illustrations, and covers. In the years that followed, his collaboration with Topolino, Italy’s leading weekly Disney magazine, became a constant.
Freccero is considered the “graphic father” of one of the most successful Disney series in recent years, Doubleduck, for which he designed the main characters and helped define its stylistic identity. More recently, he launched a parody series of Star Trek, written by Bruno Enna, titled Star Top.
Today, Freccero is regarded as one of the most significant talents of his generation. He was entrusted with one of the most important covers in Topolino history: issue #3000, a truly special piece that received widespread critical and commercial acclaim.
Also worth mentioning is the celebratory four-panel variant cover of issue #3023, which marked Panini Comics’ entry into the Italian Disney universe and was unveiled at Lucca Comics & Games 2013.
For the past five years, Andrea has served as artistic supervisor for all Disney titles published by Panini Comics – a role he carries out with great passion and enthusiasm.
The author will be attending Lucca Comics & Games from Friday, October 31st to Sunday, November 2nd.
