Andrea Maccarini (Voghera, 1977), has always been passionate about Disney comics. Since childhood, he has immersed himself in the works of his favorite authors, trying to replicate them on paper during Sunday lunches at his grandparents’ house – right before the inevitable post-lunch nap.
After studying art, he joined Disney at the young age of 18, where he attended the Academy and trained in comic techniques and style. He initially worked on stories for Topolino and Giovani Marmotte. His first story was Sgrizzo Papero e la logica d’affitto, which he still remembers for its challenges, but also for the thrill of his first publication. Transitioning from reader to comic artist felt like a dream, one he still lives today.
In those early years, he had the privilege of attending a course with Maestro Giorgio Cavazzano alongside some colleagues. Driven by a desire to enrich his artistic background, over time he expanded his work into other fields such as animation, illustration, and design. What once seemed like the end of his comic career eventually turned into what he calls “a new beginning.” In 2022, he returned to Disney – older, but with a renewed enthusiasm to dive back in.
He then met Andrea Freccero, who guided him through this new chapter, providing him with “magical fluids,” and soon enough, armed with pen and tablet, he made his comeback in Topolino. Among his realized dreams is Zio Paperone e lo Spazzolone, a story much loved by readers, part of the saga I Cimeli Raccontano, for which he handled all the artwork, inking, and coloring.
His passion, curiosity, and experiences outside the comic world constantly push him to explore new narrative and graphic solutions in the stories he illustrates. Today, just like years ago, he still feels like he’s “in training,” and believes this mindset is essential to maintaining his love for this wonderful profession.
The author will be attending Lucca Comics & Games from Wednesday, October 29th to Friday, October 31st.
